Walkabout, Performance & General Weirdness - Friday

As much as we love our music, we also love all the weird and wonderful art installations, pop up craziness, performance art and general mayhem that ensues whenever Lovebox hits town. Here’s  a little teaser of all the crazy going ons you can expect to see throughout this year’s 3 day event:

JOE RUSH AND THE MUTOID WASTE COMPANY

Joe Rush is a London born sculptor who, alongside a cavalcade of travelling scrap yard artists, hosted some of the most memorable warehouse parties in the 80’s with their post apocalyptic dystopian mayhem and giant robotic animals. He is also most recently known as co-founder of Glastonbury’s legendary Trash City and through his company, Mutoid Waste, he has created some of the most stunning features at festivals everywhere from Burning to Man to Fuji Rocks.

We are very proud and delighted that Joe is bringing his special piece for 2010 to Lovebox, The Hell Copter. A mutated, hydraulic Vietnam helicopter that has been transformed into a bizarre swampland dragonfly insect. We urge you to check it out on site.

MUTATE BRITAIN (LONDON SUMMER EXCLUSIVE)

We are equally ecstatic that we will be welcoming to Lovebox the epic art exhibition known as Mutate Britain, who began in Curtain Road’s Cordy House and who have since welcomed over 50,000 visitors to their last 2 shows. Mutate Britain specialise in creating shows in large disused spaces that bring together both individual artists and creative collectives from the streets, studios, underworld and beyond. The results have been astounding and under the leadership of the Mutoid Waste Company and The Cordy House Family, hundreds of artists (including Shephard Fairey, Dotmasters, Mode 2, Paul Insect, Dr D Part2ism, Matty Small, Teddy Baden and Inkie) have collabortated to create amaze alternative art shows.

Mutate Britain at Lovebox will be a gallery space mutated to become a giant CCTV camera. Inside the giant camera will be a selection of prints and originals from key Mutate Britain artists, available to buy, there and then. It’s a rare chance to experience a taste of the unique Mutate style and own a piece of work that's part of what is quickly becoming the most exciting arts movement in the country.

THE CAT FLAP

We’re also delighted to welcome on board BEARDED KITTEN, who will be hosting THE CAT FLAP area where all sorts of utter madness will ensue throughout the whole weekend.  Having honed their skills at festivals like Secret Garden and Bestival, Tim and Barney are licking their feline lips at the prospect of unleashing their renowned barminess at Lovebox.

Expect to see an appearance from GUERILLA SCIENCE who bring installations, films, music, live demonstrations, interactive experiments and crowd games that brings “weird science” very much to life in the middle of the East End. To give you just a teaser of the sort of activities you can launch yourself into:

·         Learn HOW TO SURVIVE A ZOMBIE ACOPOLYPSE – introduced by Dr Dale Seslick where you will learn how to cope when the undead rise from their graves and start eating human civilization, always useful for a late night bender in Shoreditch as well we think;

·         Find out how many different sexual positions you can learn in half an hour with Bernadette Vallely’s KAMASUTRA classes;

·         Take a trip in the ROCKET CHAIR, developed in consultation with astronaut Jean-Pierre Haignere. Lucky volunteers will experience lift off in the style of the Soviet “Soyuz” rocket;

·         Music psychologist GIANNA CASSIDY, beatlooper YANN SEZNEC, & singer-songwriter EOGHAN COLGAN invite you to create a festival anthem using body  motion suits to transform motion into sound and Wii mote technology.

·         Let tango specialist and psychologist PETER LOVATT analyse your dancing moves and teach you what makes a good dancer, ready for you to use at one of the 10 music stages on site.

THE HURLY BURLY CAFE

Renowned festival venue, The Hurly Burly Cafe will be on site throughout the weekend. On the surface, it seems to be a quirky little cafe with exceptional veggie food. However, climb inside their bespoke structure which resembles a ship with a huge sail canvas jutting towards the sky and you will be more than a little amazed at what can happen without any warning at all!

CUT – A - SHINE

Fancy a hoedown? Seek out the smiling fiddle and banjo players and a gaggle of rosy cheeked folk wearing gingham pinnys in the Cut a Shine tent. The best place to grab a guy or a girl that takes your eye, slap your knees and indulge in some out of control spinning,  do-se-do–ing and barn dancing. London’s Cut A Shine crew have taken barn dancing out of the churchhalls and into the fields with a twist, that is spearheading a revival in good old fashioned fun.

Joining the Cut A Shine crew will be east end underground cabaret club The Living Rooms, The Magpies Nest, Hackney based acoustic group Midnight Special, Woodburner along with face painting princesses The Plastic Hearts and the time traveling Nubile Venutians. Cut A Shine presents a melting pot of avant-guard collectives doing it their own way and making an impression on the underground east end scene. Check it out.

UNDERGROUND REBEL BINGO

Warning: This is seriously dangerous and addictive. The authorities are after them. The Police want to shut them down. Their numbers are growing. They are spreading across the country, fast. Try and find them at Lovebox before its too late!

MARIANNA HARLOTTA AND RUBY CORSET presents:

International Soprano Diva Marianna Harlotta and the amazing cellist Ruby Corset will be performing a rare UK recital together.  They  be will performing a ‘classical’ repertoire that will surprise and delight.  The Sultan of Brunei, who they performed for most recently, describes the two ladies as elegantly psychotic…

THE ONE MAN DESTRUCTION SHOW

This is a man of devastating ability who’s prepared to thrust you into a spellbinding experience where your ears will completely betray your eyes – trust us!

Rhys Clarke AKA THE ENDS

Favourite of Rob Da Bank, this man will take you on a journey of musical exploration via the butt of a ray gun and smashing conformity to pieces in the process.

So, as we said, this is just a teaser. Expect the unexpected throughout at Lovebox, we love to be different.
