Lovebox is not just about mind-bending conceptual entertainments - this year sees all of the boutique touches, bells, whistles and wonderful comic flourishes that have established the show as London’s only real festival experience.
Much of this year’s family-friendly program has been inspired by the world-renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival - with a staggeringly diverse and world-class schedule of comedy, spoken word, street theatre and cirque.
Hosted by festival impresarios Fish Seeks Bicycle, the centre piece of the area, the solar powered Firefly Fringe Solar Stage, programmed by 'Continental Drifts' will feature a glittering line-up including escapologists, unicyclists, high wire performance from Moscow, mime theatre from Toulouse, Jaipurian marching band, jazz jive dance school from the Jazz Cafe, barn dancing as well as legendary kids entertainers, The Chipolotas, Sharkey and George, Mad Science demonstrations, resident clowns and workshops galore.
With it’s easy going vibe and underlying current of showmanship you can watch leading acts on the fringe stage whilst your kids are playing on the pirate ship or running around playing Grandmother’s footsteps, here are just a few examples of what you might find.
Bruce Airhead - The metamorphosis of a man and a six-foot balloon, an original 30-minute comedy show including confetti cannons and Elvis outfits.
The Chipolatas produce and present live performance projects incorporating circus skills, music, theatre and dance to bring the global and the local experience into our magical package. Multi-talented musical clowns, their energetic entertainment style is ever evolving blending accordion and acoustic rhythms with the modern day equivalent of hip-hop and street style, tapping into themes embedded in folk culture worldwide.
Kawa Circus A sound of celebration - with bells on. Balkan rhythms, Middle Eastern melodies, klezmer, calypso and polka all come together in a set that rages with enthusiasm, demonically skilful arrangements and clattering percussion. Revelling in a roguish sense of theatre.
Record Graveyard – Woodybop Muddy. Armed with the ‘Golden Hammer’, and a bucket of Rice, takes to the stage, and in a comical whirlwind of destruction destroys his entire record collection. - But not before the audience get the chance to vote and save their favourites.
Dynamo’s Rhythm Aces particular brand of deja voodoo spin is not only sublimely refreshing, but their neon cocktail of vision and sound hands over its visa at the borders of genius. This sharp suited super slick trio take modern and contemporary hits, from Frankie goes to Hollywood’s ‘Relax’ to Motorhead ‘Ace of Spades’ via The Spice Girls, The Smiths and Ian Dury and serve them up skillet hot, in 40s/50s western swing and boogie-woogie style.
Cosmic Sausages With a repertoire of hundreds of songs, melodies and theme tunes, the Cosmic Sausages take their audience on a madcap musical tour of the world, meeting up with James Bond, Serge Gainsbourg, the Mafia, deranged cowboys, faith healers, Cossacks and overacting popstars along the way. Ambushing their audience with a sustained barrage of pop classics, mixing theatre, circus, slapstick, competitions, crowd participation and insane walkabouts.
Albion Kids Show is a mobile play resource based in the London Borough of Hackney where children aged between 0-18 can learn through safe, exciting, stimulating and imaginative activities. Their fleet of specially adapted vehicles and trailers enable them to bring their fantastic play opportunities to Lovebox for all to enjoy.
Clown Bert Clown Bert the Caretaker is here to sweep the Stage in preparation for the exciting arrival of Jean Ringilini the Star of the show! But where is the ringmaster Fredriko Fabulini? And will Jean’s private aeroplane arrive on time? Can Clown Bert save the day? A clown theatre show for children aged four and upwards. Featuring Circus Skills, giant bubbles and Bert’s broom balancing antics. Comedy walkabout including a miniature bicycle.
The Science Show – Mad Science
Educational entertainment: Children can conjure foggy dry ice storms, float on a Mad Science hovercraft, watch a foam factory at work, create super bouncy balls, make magic mud, alter sound waves, and so much more!
Sharky and George Come and join Sharky and George for an hour of really awesome interactive games, kids or no kids. If you’re on for having loads of fun and winning a lot of sweets while scampering around in hamster wheels, playing sharks and lifeguards with a gigantic multicoloured parachute and chasing rocket balloons then come on over to the Sharky and George arena.
Also making an appearances not to miss will be Soko at 17.10pm on Sunday and Cibelle at 7.05pm Saturday - Do Not Miss
